Celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay has never been shy about expressing himself. The star of Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares is perhaps more famous for his monumental blow-ups than his culinary expertise. Ramsay has tussled from time to time with plant-based eaters, insisting they weren’t experience the wide assortment of flavors meats have to offer. PETA turned up the heat on Ramsay when he joked about vegans on his Twitter account, and since then became something of a gadfly or persona non grata to vegan foodies everywhere.
Flash forward to last June, when Ramsay surprised everyone, especially plant-based eaters, when he announced he was going to ‘Give this vegan thing a try.”
Ramsay cited his health and his wife’s influence as the reason behind the change. Adding more plant-based food to your diet for health reasons is nothing new, and there’s not telling if Ramsay will stick with it, but perhaps eating some of his favorite dishes prepared in plant-based style will help!
We’ve written about how to make some of Ramsay’s classic dishes vegan, but in honor of the chef decision to at least ‘give vegan thing’ a go, we’ve put together a list of vegan takes on Ramsay’s own personal favorite foods.
1. Parsnip and Mushroom Pot Pies
If given the ultimate choice, Ramsay has gone on record as saying one of his favorite foods is shepherd’s pie. These Parsnip and Mushroom Pot Pies by Katie Culpin and Josh Bailey will do just the trick. Underneath this thermal crust, you will discover chunky, yet soft vegetables packed with nutrition which will ensure the perfect balance with every mouthful! Specifically, these pies contain panfried parsnips, mushrooms, cauliflower, turmeric, onion, garlic, and peas.
2. Cajun Tofu With Creamy Grits and Collard Greens
Ramsay once told Stephen Colbert about his love of grits and southern-style cooking. Lauren Hartmann’s recipe gives you three incredible dishes that form one epic meal. The tofu is marinated in a spicy, tangy, homemade Cajun spice mix and served with rich, creamy grits and garlicky greens. This meal will be a hit whenever you put it on the table.
3. Vietnamese Noodle Soup
On one episode of Kitchen Nightmares, Ramsay claimed the best meal he’d ever eaten was a soup a woman served him on a boat in Vietnam. Claudia Luger-Bazinger’s Vietnamese Noodle Soup fits the bill. Many spices, soup vegetables, and special touch dried shiitake mushrooms give the broth a hearty note.
4. Mushroom Butter Masala
Ramsay mentioned his favorite meal watching a movie is buttered chicken. This Mushroom Butter Masala by Kushi offers a rich and delicious gravy curry with a sauce made creamy through the addition of milk or cream and butter. This vegan mushroom butter masala is a spicy, creamy and a delicious dish.
5. Pecan and Mushroom Wellington
